Chapped Lips
Cures and Treatment

Can Chapped Lips Be Stopped Before They Start?

Chapped lips are not only unattractive, they can be very painful. Most commonly associated with cold winter weather, chapped lips can also be our body's response to:

  • exposure to sun
  • wind burn
  • smoking
  • skin disorders
  • dehydration
  • medication side effects
  • allergic reactions to skin care products
  • lip biting
  • vitamin B deficiencies

You Can Tell You Have Chapped Lips If . . .

The most common symptoms are include lips that are excessively cracked, sore, tender, painful, red, and/or peeling.

One of the worst things you can do if you have chapped lips is to lick them. The saliva evaporates, leaving lips drier than before. Our lips do not have oil glands which means they are vulnerable to external elements and require our protection. Using emollients such as vaseline or one of the chapped lip balm sticks should be one of the first steps to treat the problem. Lanolin, cocoa butter, and shea butter are also excellent to use for relief.

Chapped Lips Can Be Prevented

Some measures you can use include:

  • use a humidifier to moisten indoor air
  • drink 8-10 glasses of water daily to keep your body hydrated
  • use lip balm when going out into cold, windy or sun, and be prepared to re-apply the balm frequently
  • be sure to eat a healthy, well balanced diet containing B-complex vitamins and iron

Care and diligence will prevent having to deal with sore, chapped lips.
