How To Get Rid Of Pimples

What Causes Pimples

Pimples are caused by over-active sebaceous glands. Sometimes oil and dead cells are produced faster than they can exit from a pore. This creates a solidified plug - either a whitehead or a blackhead. A closed off pore produces a whitehead. If the pore stays open, the top of the plug can darken, becoming a blackhead.

If a whitehead ruptures the wall of a pore, bacteria can enter and cause what we call a whitehead, otherwise known as a pimple, zit or blemish.

How to Deal With Pimples

These outbreaks can be gotten rid of, and here are a few suggestions:

  • Never pinch, squeeze or pick a pimple. This only complicates the problem causing the bacteria and oils that were the original cause to spread. In turn, more redness and inflammation occur.
  • Apply an ice pack to the pimple for about 2 minutes. Try to continue this treatment at about 30 minute intervals. These cold applications will help decrease the swelling, redness and soreness you might be experiencing.
  • Use a mild, unscented, non-soap cleanser or special acne cleanser to clean your face 2 - 3 times a day. A white washcloth or an exfoliating pad should be used to gently scrub your face -- being very careful not to rub too hard. Being harsh in this cleansing step would only rob your skin of its own natural oils which help in repelling buildup naturally.
  • Apply a cream or ointment containing benzyl peroxide or salicylic acid, which are found in many over the counter acne products, to the area of the pimple. These two ingredients have a tendency to dry out skin, so don't use them too much or too frequently. People with sensitive skin should not use them at all.
  • Wear oil free make-up. Make-up products that do not contain oil are less likely to cause the build up in pores that cause pimples and blemishes.
  • Remove all makeup at night and thoroughly cleanse face with an acne-fighting cleanser to remove all traces of dirt, oil and make-up from deep within your skin.
  • Place a cotton ball with a dab of lemon juice on it or a wet tea bag on the blemish for about five minutes to lessen redness and swelling.
  • Consider using a concealer specially formulated to cover pimples. It will also help over the oily shine.

Bonus Tips to Add to Your Daily Routine to Combat Skin Outbreaks

  • Be serious about reducing the stress in your life. Skin problems including pimples, blemishes and other types of eruptions, often crop up on people who are stressed out.
Set aside a quiet time each day to completely relax, daydream, meditate or to just have a peaceful time to yourself. You might be surprised how something so simple can be so effective.
  • Be sure to get enough sleep.
  • Eat a well balanced diet that includes lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Drink plenty of water, at least 8 to 10 glasses a day.

If you follow these tips, chances are you will notice significant improvements in the appearance of your skin.  Maybe within a surprisingly short time, you will see your pimples begin to disappear.
