Winter Skin Care
Special Tips for Caring For
Winter Dry Skin

Winter is a wonderful time of the year when we look forward to the crisp, cold air, holidays, sitting by mesmerizing, warm fireplaces.

However, the season changes bringing cold temperatures and lower humidity levels can have a detrimental effect on your skin. Luckily, with a few precautions, you should be able to minimize problems of winter skin.

Best Way to Care for Dry Skin of Winter

Use a moisturizer cream  with SPF 15-30 on your face throughout the winter. Protection from the sun is as important during the winter months as it is during the rest of the year. Did you know that sun reflects off of snow and ice, and you can actually get doubled exposure to its rays?

  1. Take short, warm showers. Pat skin gently with a terry cloth towel until the skin is almost dry. Apply your moisturizer and/or lotion to the skin while it is still damp. Hot showers rob skin of its natural moisturizing oils making the skin dry and itchy.
  2. Use mild soaps rather than deodorant soaps which have a tendency to be more drying.
  3. The skin on your hands is thinner than that on other areas of your body. Therefore, it needs extra care and protection during the winter. After washing your hands, dry them thoroughly and use a good hand cream.   Wear gloves made of a material that does not irritate your skin. You might consider wearing cotton mittens next to your skin before putting on your wool, synthetic, etc. mittens.
  4. Elbows, knees and feet are completely covered during the winter months. They should be pampered, nevertheless, to prevent thick skin build up caused by friction of clothing and boots. A good scrubbing with a natural loofah sponge, followed by the application of a rich cream will go a long way in preventing problems.
  5. Protect your lips with good lip balm with SPF in it. Avoid licking lips as much as possible because that will cause your lips to dry and crack. If you are unfortunate enough to get a bad case of chapped lips and don't have a specific product for chapped lips, use Vaseline Intensive Care which works wonders.
  6. Massaging is a great way to keep your winter skin in great shape. Take time to do this once or twice a week to stimulate your circulation.

In winter, with the heat on and windows closed, the inside air becomes very dry. If you do no already have a humidifying system, consider investing in an inexpensive room humidifier. This will not only relieve dry, itchy skin, it will help keep your sinus passages from drying out.
